It is with profound sadness and heartfelt respect that we honor the life and legacy of Elle Simone Scott, an extraordinary chef, food stylist, and trailblazer whose passing at the age of 49 leaves a lasting void in the culinary world and beyond.
Elle Simone Scott was a pioneering force in food media, widely recognized as the first Black woman to become a regular on America’s Test Kitchen. Joining the PBS program in 2016, she quickly became a beloved presence, admired not only for her culinary expertise but also for her authenticity, warmth, and passion for storytelling through food. As a test cook, host, and executive editor, she brought creativity, insight, and cultural depth to every role she embraced.
Born in Detroit in 1976, Elle’s love for cooking was deeply rooted in family tradition, inspired by her great-grandmother’s belief that food carries emotional and cultural significance. Though she began her career as a social worker, the challenges of the 2008 recession led her to pursue her true passion. With determination and courage, she reinvented her path—training in professional kitchens, studying culinary arts, and eventually building a career that would inspire countless others.
Elle was not only a chef but also a visionary advocate for representation and inclusion. Recognizing the lack of diversity within the culinary industry, she founded SheChef, a network dedicated to supporting and uplifting women of color in food. Through this initiative and her public voice, she empowered others to see themselves reflected in spaces where they had long been underrepresented.
Her advocacy extended to issues of food access and equity, shaped by her own experiences and her deep commitment to community. Even in the face of personal challenges, including her diagnosis with ovarian cancer, Elle remained resilient and purposeful, using her platform to inspire change and encourage others to live with intention.
Above all, Elle Simone Scott will be remembered for her generosity of spirit, her unwavering determination, and her ability to uplift others. She leaves behind a powerful legacy—one defined by courage, representation, and meaningful impact.
