It is with deep sorrow and heartfelt respect that we honor the life and legacy of Donald R. Brake, a remarkable individual who passed away peacefully on April 2, 2026, at the age of 91 in Fairfield. Don lived a full and meaningful life defined by service, dedication, and a genuine love for family, community, and lifelong learning.

Born on October 21, 1934, in Albion, Illinois, to Clifford and Nina Brake, Don carried forward values of hard work, curiosity, and kindness throughout his life. A proud graduate of Southern Illinois University, where he earned his degree in education in 1957, he soon began a distinguished career in the Fairfield Public School District. As a 7th grade science teacher and shop instructor, Don inspired generations of students, not only through academics but through creativity and encouragement. His passion for stamp collecting even led him to establish a school stamp club, reflecting his desire to share knowledge and spark curiosity in young minds.

On March 29, 1958, Don married the love of his life, Susan Brake, beginning a lifelong partnership filled with love, adventure, and shared purpose. Together, they built a beautiful family and created lasting memories through travel, exploring all 50 states and beyond. Don’s many interests—from fishing, camping, and genealogy to crafting stained glass—demonstrated his appreciation for both nature and artistry.

A devoted member of Cornerstone Community Church, Don was known for his generosity and service, from preparing meals for others to supporting youth and community programs. His involvement with the Kiwanis, Boy Scouts, and Fairfield Memorial Hospital Auxiliary reflected his deep commitment to giving back.

Above all, Don cherished his family. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather whose presence brought joy and strength to those around him.
