A fifth-generation Tampa native, Andy Johnson’s connection to his community ran deep. Raised on Davis Islands, his fascination with weather began at an early age, ultimately shaping a lifelong calling. He graduated with honors from Florida State University in 1979, earning a Bachelor of Science in meteorology—the same year he began his remarkable 34-year career with WTVT-TV (FOX 13). Over the decades, Andy became a trusted and familiar presence in the homes of countless viewers, guiding them through daily forecasts and life-threatening storms with clarity, calm, and expertise.
Beyond the newsroom, Andy was a pioneer and leader in his field. He founded Johnson Forensic Meteorological Consulting in 1997, extending his expertise into the private sector while continuing his broadcast career. His contributions to meteorology were vast, including advancements in broadcast technology and meaningful involvement with the American Meteorological Society, where he served with distinction. His professional excellence was recognized globally, earning him the rare distinction of holding multiple certifications and being named a Fellow of the American Meteorological Society.
Andy’s passion extended far beyond science—he was deeply committed to mentorship, education, and community outreach.
