It is with profound sadness and heartfelt gratitude that we honor the life and legacy of Laura Mercer of Sydney, Nova Scotia, a beloved educator, musician, and community leader whose passing leaves a deep and lasting void in the hearts of all who knew her.
Laura Mercer dedicated her life to the power of music and education, serving as a respected Instrumental Music Educator with the Cape Breton Victoria Regional School Board. A graduate of Acadia University with a Bachelor of Music Education, she carried her passion for music into every classroom, rehearsal, and performance, inspiring countless students to discover their own voices through sound. Her influence extended far beyond technical instruction—she nurtured confidence, creativity, and a lifelong love of the arts.
As the founder and guiding force behind the Second Wind Community Concert Band, Laura created more than a musical ensemble—she built a community. She welcomed individuals of all ages and skill levels, encouraging them to pursue music with joy and courage. Her philosophy, “Music for Life,” was evident in everything she did, reminding others that passion and creativity have no limits.
Laura will be remembered not only for her accomplishments but for her extraordinary kindness. She had a rare gift for making people feel valued and seen, always offering a warm smile, a comforting hug, or words of encouragement. Even in her own moments of struggle, she uplifted others, as reflected in the heartfelt messages she shared with friends and loved ones.
Her absence will be deeply felt by her family, including Gary and her children, as well as by her many friends, students, and fellow musicians. We extend our deepest condolences to all who are grieving this tremendous loss. May you find comfort in the countless memories she created and in the enduring impact she had on so many lives.
Though Laura is no longer with us, her legacy lives on—in every note played, every student inspired, and every life she touched with her generosity and spirit. Her music continues, echoing in the hearts of all who knew her.
Rest peacefully, Laura Mercer. Your light, your kindness, and your music will never be forgotten.
